I live in a Boston suburb, and like learning about the local fiber community. It took me a while to find a knitting group, and I still don't have a store I can call my local yarn shop. So I look forward to all your great information about people and businesses in the Boston area.

Your podcast really shows how yarn builds local community, which is why I love it so much. Go Guido!

Dude,
Take a break. You've been running wild, pulling on all ends, especially for the last three months. Winter is time to hibernate. Go ahead. You can do it. Sit still.
Spring will come again.

Hi Guido! I have an "opposite" suggestion. When I feel worn down, I make something really simple, like a basic wash cloth. Fast, but still useful. Or I make preemie caps for charity, often using up odds and ends of yarn for colorful combinations. Helps me realize anything I knit or crochet has value, even if it isn't the fanciest design, technique, or yarn. Best of luck. Hope to hear you again soon!

Hi, Guido! I, too, had taken a break but now I'm back and catching up on podcasts and trying to finish up projects. My thoughts on how to get your mojo back include the challenge of just choosing ONE of Susan's toys to knit...You will be fascinated with the construction and not at all frustrated with the directions. Just pick one toy, go into your stash and cast on. You'll be hooked...guaranteed! 'Miss you!

hi, guido!

it's a god thing that you are honest and self aware enough to recognize what you are going through. just realize that you have a ton of support in the community (that you had a GIANT hand in building), and that everyone has down time. recharging your creative batteries is a necessary part of the process.
just don't give up on yourself. if you had never started, i never would have met you, and that would be sad!

Hey there,
I get what it's like... I have had a very slow start to the 'New Year' It's certainly not that I'm knitting less! I have just lost the rhythm of recording my journey. It takes time and to produce quality material, it takes effort and continual improvement! I think I've moved into a space where I'm less enthusiastic and perhaps more authentic in my posts. I would rather have quality than quantity.

Don't fake where you're at, everyone likes to see discipline, and the ability to KEEP UP! but, we are all human. Maybe new possibility meand deeper, or different. I want to hear that you're human.
Take care,
L.

I usually go to the archives of someone that knits and spins beautifully. I will look at Grumperina or Jared Flood's work, and that will get my inspiration back up. I also let myself have some liberty with starting new projects...If setting aside that sweater I've been working on forever and starting a new pair of socks gets the ball rolling, then so be it! I will go back to the sweater once I get all my motivation back!

I've been in a bit of a funk too :( I was all excited to try to design a pattern for the Ravelympics. But it failed, and then I tried to do a WIP which would have been an impressive feat, but then my hands betrayed me and half my fingers on one hand went numb.
So I've said to heck with it, and been playing plants vs zombies :)
once my fingers feel again, I'll pick up a second sock, and see how I feel from there.

And of course, so that I'm fully prepared, I've continued to add to my stash.

For me it's trying something new and exciting that gets me revved up. Funky yarn also helps.

Guido, it sounds like you need something really funky. There are so many boring everyday ordinary things in Boston that need to be "tagged". Ghetto knitting may just be your liberator.

You know what? For me, it just works if I pick up and start. I may not want to knit or sew at all, but before long, it's making me feel better and I'm all motivated again. It sounds kind of stupid and/or trite, but really, just starting to do makes the rest of doing easier. Good luck on your defunkification! I am rooting for you!!

Well, I've been listening most of the day to your old podcasts. I'm up to the 13th episode. You have confirmed for me that It's a Purl, Man is a take off on Itzhak Perlman. That is a great tribute to a great man.

Hey! I just found your podcast via an older episode of CogKnitive. I'm listening from the beginning and wanted to say thanks for playing Overreacting by Brad Sucks. I was kind of depressed this morning and when I listend to it I laughed out loud. Totally unexpected. Thanks a lot!

Now that you've been to Rhinebeck you can add it to your Rav facebook. I enjoyed listening to your podcast on my morning walk. I love your honesty and I probably would have also come back with a load of books. Glad you had a fantastic time! Look forward to hearing more of your fiber adventures in the future. Take care Tracy in Linden, CA

Hey Guido. It's Kathy from Music City. I caught your interview on Knit a Journey. It was the BEST interview I've ever heard on a knitting podcast. Her questions were fabulous and your answers were amazing. You couldn't have done better if you'd written out the answers in advance. It was a very Fresh Air moment.

Found another great link for this, via the AAFA, who unlike the CFDA, is opposed to this legislation for the very reasons RedQueen notes:

http://www.apparelandfootwear.org/LegislativeTradeNews/details.asp?PUBLICATIONS_ID=339

"More likely, what would happen is that the law would be passed, and within two years, every member of the fashion industry would be lobbying to have it repealed."

Well, exactly. Although, I worry that instead of that, it would be more like the CPSIA, where it would lead to design and, more importantly, manufacturing monopolies.

I am really interested, in a train-wreck rubbernecking sort of way, to see how this goes. In the meantime, I a still trying to sprad the word so that perhaps it will simply not go altogether.

Hey, Guido (and Jen!) -- thanks for this interview. I work in the fashion industry, and it was appalling to hear that Diane von F. was leading the charge for this. Although I have never been a fan of her style, I have always respected her work as a designer. To hear that she is being so short-sighted as to push this issue is amazing. I played this show for everyone at work, and it sparked a flurry of iPhone lookups into the issue. The far-reaching consequences of this being passed are staggering. In a worst-case scenario, etsy would be eliminated, all the pattern houses (Butterick, Simplicity, McCalls, etc.) would be shut down, and local craft fairs would become illegal.

More likely, what would happen is that the law would be passed, and within two years, every member of the fashion industry would be lobbying to have it repealed. It would effectively shut down innovation of design. Any fashion house would only be able to use the elements of their first season when the law went into effect, as everyone would immediately patent their current line. And grab any historical patterns they could to add them to their catalogue. I am disappointed in Diane v.F. for being so stupid.

I haven't listened yet, but I think its a very interesting topic. A lot of people who would never consider themselves thieves or pirates will print off a copy of a pattern for a friend or family member without a second thought.
I think especially with web-based patterns a lot of the issue is some knitters aren't as web savvy and so they don't realize that even if its a free pattern, the reason its free is because the designer is getting ad revenue for when you click onto their site, and by printing off 5 copies of that pattern for your knit night friends, you're still stealing.

I have to tell you first that I am so sorry about your loss.

Secondly, what a great kid your cousin, Ian, is. He is so refreshing and in reading between the lines, it's obvious how much you love him and how much he admires you.

It was just wonderful. You are both blessed to be in each others lives.

I've spent most of my adult life in a male-dominated profession, so I understood your discomfort in feeling left out of the feminist-oriented knitting book that you reviewed. I would be just as happy in a coed knitting group as an all-female group, and so would the other female knitters I know.

You know... I totally forgot that the podcast ended in the middle of a drawn out ramble... thanks you all for pointing this out to me.

Turns out I ran out of space on my recorder. It was done listening to me talk and seeing as I needed to get this out quickly I thought it would be a good idea to just push it out.

I noticed the same thing that Patti mentioned. In mid-sentence, poof, you were gone!

Anyway, I was listening to this episode while sitting on a park bench across from my office in downtown and could listen "live" to your background sounds: busses, sirens, general city busy-ness. This was a unique coincidence for me as I usually listen to you in the evening while relaxing with my knitting.

Oh, how I wish I could attend your party, but I can't get to Maryland this weekend. And, sorry, I don't have a blog to post a link. I do hope you have sell-out crowd, though. Sounds like a lot of fun!!

I am, however, hoping to make it to Stitches East or maybe Rhinebeck (or both, if I'm lucky!!).

I have been knitting for about 10 years but just recently discovered knitting podcasts. My husband gave me an iPod Touch for my 60th birthday and it really helped me to ward off alzheimer's by learning how to use it. It was hard, but I was motivated by the fact that there were knitting shows I could listen to! Oh man, get out of my way - I'm getting those shows! So I've tried them all out and have sorted out the ones I really like: 1) It's a Purl, Man, 2) Stash and Burn, 3) Faery Knitting, and 4) Cast-on. You are a jewel of a find, Mr. It's a Purl, Man! Thank you very much. I'm only on episode # 5, so I happily have lots more to listen to before I'm current.

I'm catching up on all the old episodes and I just listened to this one. I was laughing so hard at work that people probably thought I was nuts. I have some old knitting magazines from the 30's and 40's that I like to look at because they seem to be a lot of war propaganda. Thank you for making my lunchtime fun. I love your show!

I love what you made! My son and future daughter-in-law agreed that they would love to have me make a Chuppah for their big day . May I also ask what the pattern is, needles and yarn used and do you think I could do this by the end of the year without working all day and night on it?

Great podcast! I'm passionate about feeling like I'm making a difference. Fiberwise I like making gifts that people will actually use, to stay warm, to feel comforted, etc. I like color and texture. I like knowing where the fiber came from, because for me, when I know the history, I feel more connected.

Thanks for the reminder on twitter :-) Passion, wow that is a tough thing to define for me. I think maybe my passion is "doing" or confined creation. I really like knitting, but only with a pattern. I love sewing, but only quilts with blocks designed by someone else. I love taking something and making it into something else, but I do not like "coming up with ideas". Not sure if that makes sense. I like being in charge of getting stuff done, I just don't want to define how to get it done.

Oh, I just *loved* this podcast. Annie's real-ness is overwhelmingly refreshing.
My passion? I thought it was color and fiber, but the more I get out there, in my community - I realize that the color and the fiber is just a way to *connect* my local farmers with fiber artists. That's my passion - connecting small famrs, local agriculture with people who will be passionately appreciative of it.

Guido-
Your plans for your guild are fantastic. I wish I were from the Boston area. As to your request for suggestion of topics...plan things that you as a knitter would enjoy. Then after you build your following, brainstorm at a meeting to what others have to sugest. I like to check out what festivals are offering in workshops or what magazines are featuring as the new hot topic. The key is to offer topics that will interest all skill levels. Great job on the podcasting Guido. I really enjoy hearing from my knitting buddy in Boston. And remember...If you build it they will come...

I really should stop procrastinating when it comes to podcasts. It's probably too late for the book/yarn drawing...I really don't know...but I'll make a post anyway. I am passionate about homemade stuff whether it's knitted, crocheted, sewn, whatever. I just wish more people would make gifts rather than spending tons of money buying things. I make all my christmas gifts and impress upon my children the value of hand made. I just feel that it means so much more when you spend quality time working on a quality project for someone you love.

Hi, Guido!

I love your podcasts and this one was special.

I tend to be passionate about what I'm doing right now. I'm trying to diversify my knitting, trying lace and trying different sock patterns so I can find some that fit.

Thanks for podcasting.

Hi Guido, fun episode with one of my favorite people. I'm passionate about dyeing, knitting and spinning. Creating something from plain white wool straight off of the sheep and turning it into a lovely shawl or sweater.... that gives me the most incredible feeling of accomplishment.

Loved the interview!

Passion...I think I'm passionate about what I'm doing right now. So it changes. I just love learning about new things, so that's one passion. And now my other passion is knitting, and spinning, and cooking, and birds. Oh, it's so hard to nail it down to two! Back to knitting!

Hi Guido...
Really enjoyed listening to your interview with Annie. What struck me the most, even before the content of the interview, is the fact that she sounds so much like a close friend of mine. Her voice, inflection, sound... everything. I admire people who can write honestly about themselves, and nothing is more funny than the truth. She inspires me to revive my own blog which lies dormant, buried at the bottom of the internet highway.

My passion is information and passing it along wherever needed. My words fly out of my mouth, or out of my typing fingers at supersonic speeds, and 70+ wpm. I also tend to write honestly about myself and have often wondered what people thought of me after writing a blog post. I have a Self Rule, and that is never erase/delete my thoughts from paper or the blog tablet. It's not good unless it gets out there!

Ah, now that I wrote that, I can't delete it. I am reading some of the other posts and they all seem so much more noble.... oh well, this is me.

Hi Guido...
Just to let you know that a group of women named "We da Posse" are REALLY conducting our own sort of "Fiber Camp". We are going to a place in the Poconos, PA, from Friday to Sunday, and even got ourselves a teacher to teach us a couple of classes. I say it's fiber camp because it's kind of rustic and we can do "campy" type things there, as well.

Fun, Fun, FUN!

Thank you Annie for being real about your struggles.
As a young (two-time cancer survivor) I am passionate about regular screenings for young women. I am always encouraging my friends and co-workers to get their yearly check-ups and mammograms, even when they don't feel like it. Early detection saved my life twice and that is something to be passionate about.

I loved this episode. It was such a balance of yes it is a bad thing but let's look at what is good and enjoy that. Very inspirational but down to earth.

I am passionate about working with moms and babies (dads too!). I love empowering them to find that they are great parents and that they and their children will learn and grow together. I always feel honored to be a brief part of their lives but hopefully make an impact that allows them to feel positive and and joyful about becoming a family.

Great project.... but you are right, calling it knitting is misleading! I've been crocheting for 10 years and knitting for 1 year. I now love knitting too and think we should all learn to do both... but give credit where credit is due! So often crocheting is brushed off as a lower class craft. I get that her name is Knitta Please, but that bus was definitely mostly crocheted.
I prefer to use the term "yarn crafting." Then you have all of your bases covered. Knitting, Crocheting, Needle Felting, Felting, dipping yarn in glue or whatever else you want to do with wooly goodness. : )

Guido, that was a lovely interview. I'm hoping to get into one of Annie's classes when she comes to the Great Lakes Fiber Festival in May.

Knitting has been my passion for the past few years. I find it engaging, therapeutic and and filled with new lessons and humbling experiences. The fiber community is as diverse as it is interesting and I've been really pleased with the people that I've met there.

Have a good week.
